Edinburgh readers set UK record for longest reading chain
The UK record for the longest reading chain was today set by 219 book worms of all ages at Sighthill Library in Edinburgh.
During the record attempt, which was organised by the Edinburgh International Book Festival in partnership with Edinburgh City Libraries, every participant in the chain read aloud a sentence from the novel Prisoner in Alcatraz by award-winning Scottish childrens’ author Theresa Breslin.
Each of the record holders involved in the reading received a commemorative copy of the book, kindly donated by Barrington Stoke who publish books accessible to struggling and less confident readers.
Janet Smyth, Children & Education Programme Director of the Book Festival said ‘There was a brilliant atmosphere down at Sighthill Library today and we are thrilled to have taken part in the event and to hold the record for the longest reading chain in the UK. We are looking forward to going for the World Record next year’.
