As Mayor of London, Sadiq Khan has the immense task of trying to improve the lives and experiences of everyone who lives, works or visits the English capital.
At the age of 43, Khan was unexpectedly diagnosed with adult-onset asthma, brought on by decades of breathing the city’s toxic air, and exacerbated by training for the 2014 London marathon. This discovery transformed Khan into one of the world’s most prominent politicians campaigning on green issues for their constituents – because clean air is a matter of life and death.
Today, Khan joins director of the V&A Dundee, Leonie Bell, to talk about his book Breathe: How to Win a Greener World, what a ‘liveable’ city really means, how city planners and dwellers keep up with the pace of expansion, and the role of cities in battling the climate crisis.
