Clean Money: Can fundraising ever be ethical?

Can fundraising ever be ethical? In such a challenging financial context for arts organisations, how should they determine who to take money from and when to decline? What matters more: where money has come from, or where it is going?

Join us for a lively and interactive debate on these questions and more, guided by Alisha Fernandez Miranda, author and Chair of the award-winning social impact advisory firm I.G. Advisors.

Fully interactive in nature, and conducted under Chatham House rules to support open and honest discussion, groups of participants will be handed questions, based on possible situations, to discuss with strangers and peers alongside a range of expert facilitators. Encouraging everyone to step outside their viewpoints, and consider these important topics from another angle, participants will be required to advocate for or from a particular stance or point of view - whether or not it aligns with their personal perspective.

Come for a morning of curiosity, connection, critical thinking and healthy debate in a safe environment where all views will be welcomed and encouraged.

Event guidelines

Due to the challenging nature of the questions discussed, and to encourage open dialogue and constructive debate, we have taken a number of precautions to ensure the safety and wellbeing of everyone attending.

  • The event will follow Chatham House rules (meaning that while information gathered during the event can be shared, it cannot be linked to any individual participant), but participants who do not wish to be quoted, even anonymously, will be able to indicate this to organisers.
  • Each table will have an experienced facilitator to ensure all participants are respectful and abide by the guidelines.

In booking a ticket for this event, you agree to the following:

  • Each participant will share only their first name – no other identifying information can be shared until after the discussion.
  • Each participant will be required to advocate their assigned position on a fictional debate prompt, regardless of their personal beliefs, as we believe this is the best way to encourage everyone to think about these questions issue from all perspectives.

Our aim is to create a safe space for everyone to explore this issue. Failure to follow the guidelines will result in being asked to leave.

Further information will be sent to attendees in advance of the event.
