Two very different novels take the political and cultural temperature of the nation. Adam Biles reworks an Orwell classic to give us Beasts of England, featuring a premier petting zoo where something is amiss; Rebecca Solnit describes it as ‘as much of our time as Animal Farm was of its’. Booker Prize-nominee Sunjeev Sahota chronicles a union man’s rise and fall in The Spoiled Heart, a novel of Shakespearean highs and lows. Chaired by Mary Robson.
